All in the Family Portraits

So, the Odyssey Scoop, also known as the #1 Odyssey fan site in the universe, recently announced that Focus is bringing Family Portraits to iTunes. In other words...

The best chestnuts roasting on an open fire ever.
BEST. EARLY. AIO. CHRISTMAS. PRESENT. EVER. PLUS. ALL. THESE. SHORT. SENTENCES.

So if you've been reading our blog, you know that we tried to review as many Portraits as possible before we couldn't find anymore. That all changes, thanks to them iTunes! Your next review will NOW be of #7: While Dad's Away, set to be released sometime next week.

What's coming up at OCO as we come ever closer to Christmas? Our Christmas present to you will sadly be a bit delayed into next year, but we'll kick off our promo campaign for our upcoming podcast Candid KOnversations with Josh and Ally (featuring a very special guest), write as many Album 56 reviews as possible before returning to school, and write a little op-ed piece about why Connie and Jason simply wouldn't work (we'll let you know how controversial it gets).

The anniversary for Odyssey Nerd is tomorrow! If you haven't seen it yet, here's your chance! Feliz navidad, sheng dan kuai le, merry Christmas, and С Рождеством. And many more!

Whack! The Yak With Zach!

Hey everybody!

Thanks to everyone who tuned in this past Wednesday to hear The Yak With Zach! It was a lot of fun and I loved talking to everyone who called in!

Ben C. and Anthea, thank you for all of your amazing questions; I got to ask almost all of them on the air!

And now I have two exciting Christmas goodies to share with you today...

1. The Yak With Zach is being edited.
Why is this so exciting? If you haven't listened to our interview and review sesh with Austin and Tasha, check it out! Don't worry, I'll wait...okay, so our big project that we've been working on is a new podcast called Candid KOnversations with Josh and Ally.  We're hoping to put together the first episode by the end of the year! Here's the official description:
When Mr. Ralph Adams, station manager at Odyssey 105, hears Candid Conversations with Connie, he convinces Mr. Whittaker to give him the rights to start a national spinoff on internet radio, as long as he finds the right hosts that know their Odyssey. Introducing...Josh and Ally!
Candid KOnversations with Josh and Ally is an engaging, engrossing conversational podcast who bring on fascinating guests and talk candidly with them on a variety of topics. As well, the opening and closing segments are hosted by Josh and Ally's stuffed animal friends, Puppy and Woofy, who provide a "Chris"-like role to the show.
Puppy Norman is a 9-year-old media mogul. He is arguably the most popular stuffed animal on the face of the earth, rivaling Elmo and the Beatles. While self-centered, rich, blunt, and occasionally bratty, he's also funny, sweet, and smart. Woofy Doggy is a 11-year-old puppy media mogul, and co-owner of the Puppy and Woofy Company, as well as being Puppy's best friend. Woofy is the best counterpart to Puppy's character. He's old-fashioned, slow, formal, and kind, much like the animal version of Tom Riley.
Candid KOnversations would be a non-profit podcast created and produced by Ko Media inspired by Focus on the Family's popular radio drama Adventures in Odyssey. It combines the bro-sis, friend-sis relationship of The AIO Blogcast, Abby and Mandie, and The Boredom Buster; the storytelling and humor of The Ceiling Fan and The WodFamOdPod; the analysis of JAAIOP, the Whit's End Blog, and the Unofficial Podcast; and the conversational conversations of Connie! During these segments, the Kos will also engage in adventures that translate over to the interviews, creating a story element to the podcast. Combining all the great elements of a fun AIO podcast, from interviews to outrageous, hilarious stories, to human, realistic characters, to important life lessons, Candid KOnversations is a podcast you're not gonna wanna miss!
COMING SOON TO THIS BLOG NEAR YOU! Check out the official page above for more information - it's now been fully updated with description and expected release dates for the first five episodes.

2. A sequel to Odyssey Nerd is underway!
We're really excited about this one. Why? You'll know if you listened on Wednesday...if you did, don't tell! ;) We hope to get that out to you guys by Christmas.

That's it for now; if time permits, I'll try to catch up on Album 56 reviews this week. Merry Christmas!

P.S. Please pray for me - I'm going through doubts and uncertainties in my faith and am requesting your support. Thank you!

25 Reasons Why We're Thankful for Adventures in Odyssey

Well, friends, family, and countrymen, we have arrived at the 25th anniversary of the best small town in America on the radio! Just think, it all started when, 25 years ago, Phil Lollar and Steve Harris began to craft an idea that, on November 21, 1987, "the adventure begins." We've been signed, sealed, & committed ever since! The following list is why we love Odyssey so much..let's take it from the top!

Josh in black, Ally in blue

1. Realism.
Everyone wants to relate to something even by a little to love something. It gives a connection to the audience, draws them in. Odyssey is beloved by fans at home and abroad for providing a "slice-of-life" every day for twenty five years.  Granted, it's not every day you might stop an evil company from taking over the world via mind controlled radio stations, but it is every day we deal with loss, love, and doubt in our faith.

2. Lessons.
How many of you have watched an episode of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo or Duck Dynasty recently?  We're not exactly in an age of educational, entertaining media. But like everything else, Odyssey dares to be different, telling quality stories with important lessons and teaching the FUNdamentals of Christian life! We learn the cause and effect  of our actions and learn how to ask God for forgiveness, to be lost and found! The big picture is made apparent when we learn to love others and see things differently, to live on earth as it is in heaven.

3. Action-adventure/mysteries.
The wonderful thing about Odyssey is that it transcends genres, times, and places. It's a timeless show which incorporates all kinds of genres, making it enjoyable for all ages. One of the most popular genres is action-adventure/mysteries. Jason Whittaker continues to thrill listeners with his exciting escapades...and with The Labyrinth winning Best Episode for Album 55, expect more in the future! We love to go in hot pursuit and help those with no way out, giving others a hand in the deep end. Mysteries are always popular because we get to see our favorite characters working together to figure cool stuff out! Case in point: Wooton and Bernard make a hilarious duo as Sherlock and Holmes on The Other Side of the Glass, while Whit and Connie investigate a stolen government computer while Waylaid in the Windy City. Exciting plotlines move forward other story threads with interesting elements, as we saw with in the Blackgaard Chronicles and in The Green Ring Conspiracy. With daring deeds, sinister schemes, Odyssey continues to enthrall listeners with action-packed awesomeness. Consider it Mission: Accomplished.

4. Emotion.
THIS MAKES IT ALL SOUND REAL MAN. JUST IT JUST *BALLS OUT IN TEARS* Just kidding, but seriously, the emotion and emphasis of the episodes the writers put into each one gives it feeling. It makes the episode what it is. Imagine an emotionless episode, you'd be bored out of your skull! Emotion like Clara made me cry, when Whit said goodbye to that sweet little girl, and the way she said "Good bye Mr. Whit", it gives us the wanting of something more, to make us laugh, to make us scared, to make us wonder. Odyssey embraces emotion; it never shies away, but finds new ways to explore what makes up emotion and how it affects others. Powerful stuff - and it's never on thin ice.

5. Family feeling.
After being around for 25 years, you can't help but be attached to these characters and this town. As a resident Odyssey nerd, "I can tell you what these people are gonna have for breakfast before they even know it themselves." (Monica Stone, Sheep's Clothing) We've seen different and memorable family dynamics throughout the years - from the Barclays (shoutouts to (D)Jave Griffin, Chuck Bolte, Azure Janofsky, Carol Bilger) to the Jacobs (Phil Lollar, Sage Bolte, Erin Bolte) to the Mulligans (Bill Myers, Vaughn Taylor, Chris Castile, Nicole Myers) to the Washingtons (Mark Christopher Laurence, J Karen Thomas, Kendre Berry, Courtney Brown) to the Parkers (Mark Evan Jackson, Amanda Troop, Zach Callison, Sydney Shiotani, Kelly Stables) and many, many more.

6. The Novacom Saga.
Ah, yes. The pinnacle of Odyssey's history. In this illustrious time, our friends teamed up to save the world as they knew it from mind controlled destruction by an evil corporation called Andromeda, creating a tidal wave of fascinating plot threads, interesting character developments, and memorable characters. Through Danger Signals to Countermoves to Battlelines, we saw how the darkness before dawn was as memorable - and as engaging and character-building - as the sunrise itself. It's another fine day...

7. The characters.
The grandfatherly Whit. The hilarious crazy Wooton. The sweet but clumsy Connie. The intelligent brainy Eugene. The sarcastic, but caring Bernard. And all the other unique characters. They bring Odyssey to its name, an adventure. These characters like the actors give us emotion, relate with us, and experience things we'd never imagine. The heart they have for God inspires and encourages kids and adults to love God more each and every day. Their life consisting of lessons, and experiences give us something to think about. To apply to our own lives. They provide us days to remember!

8. The sound design.
The sound designers are the hidden treasures of Odyssey. We don't acknowledge their contributions enough, but every episode is made all the more realistic by the designers bringing in sound to bring the world of Odyssey to life. We've seen incredible innovations in sound from The Imagination Station to Sgt. York, going beyond expectations, and I look forward to seeing (or hearing) them continue to take sound into new dimensions for listeners!

9. That score.
John Campbell is a fantastic composer. He takes us along for the ride on musical journeys that coincide with the characters we love on Odyssey's journeys, which is why he's so musically talented. If there ever comes a day when he releases a compilation of all his instrumental work done on Odyssey, I'll be the first in line. He's so great that's he made my list of all-time favorite composers, which includes Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, Thomas Newman, Michael Giacchino, and Hans Zimmer.

10. The Actors
These are the people who bring smiles to our faces, the laughs out of our mouths, and the emotion in our hearts. The actors put their whole hearts into speaking their roles. Odyssey feels like hanging with my own family because these actors are so incredibly talented. Much cred goes out to Hal Smith, Walker Edmiston (Wish you were here!), Katie Leigh, Will Ryan, Dave Madden, Alan Young, Paul McCusker, Earl Boen, Andre Stojka, Corey Burton, and the rest of the gifted cast who bring to life fascinating characters every day on the radio. They bring our virtual realities to life, crafting their part of stories that could only happen in your wildest dreams or in flights of imagination. These actors' performances are why we get so excited when Eugene Returns!

11. Imagination Station
Are you ready for a place of wonder, a time of discovery, and a passport to adventure? Then step inside Whit's greatest invention, which lets you feel like you're actually back in historical or Biblical times, and makes it possible to meet your heroes! Some of my favorite episodes have occurred inside this machine, such as The Perfect Church. The idea of going to other times...other places is a powerful part of our imagination and is brought to life in Odyssey!

12. Kids' Radio
Kids' Radio episodes must be incredibly fun to write. You're basically allowed creative freedom, as anything can happen on the radio. It's another one of the risks and rewards that make up what Odyssey is today, and inspired me on my own radio show! (By the way, if you're interested in listening, check out the Welcome! column on the right and click on the link on the links section.) From Hidden in My Heart to The Devil Made Me Do It, creativity never seems to diminish here. Love Candid Conversations with Connie! I'm so glad they're back on the air.

13. Online fan community.
All fans of Odyssey have a special bond. I felt it in Dallas and I even feel it online, which bonds even stronger when we have a shared love for God first and Odyssey later! We're all passionate, well-versed, smart, and fun to talk to, and I love talking to all Odyssey fans on the ToO, Soda Shop, Campbell County message boards, Facebook, and right here on the blog, and this past summer has been the wildest summer ever, with new Odyssey blogs springing up!

14. Whit
Odyssey would not be the same without Whit. Whit's the one we all love, who's so grandfatherly and wise. He gives us all the advice and teaches us in a way that makes us understand fully. In The Highest Stakes, Part 2, Whit was willing to pay Carson's debt even if he was a stranger. His imagination for kids and the way he relates to them draws people in. Whether anyone comes to Odyssey once Whit's gone, it wouldn't be the same. It would NEVER BE THE SAME. Whit represents the show in many ways: he is ageless, timeless, wise, humorous, and a strong Christian man. We've seen him transcend time in different interpretations of the character played by Hal Smith, Paul Herlinger, and now Andre Stojka, who together create a complex man who continues to be a strong role model for Odyssey and all of us to follow. That's why we were so glad when the search for Whit found him once again.

15. Humor + The Ceiling Fan
You'd think that a show targeted for 8-12 years old would only make that target demographic laugh - and that's many of them do. Odyssey manages the rare feat of making people of all ages laugh - from the hilarious Broken Window to Bernard's sarcasm to comedy even in the face of tragedy (a la To Mend or Repair). And while we're talking about humor, we might as well bring up The Ceiling Fan, the funniest Odyssey homage podcast on the Internet airwaves.

16. Christian worldview.
In a world that continues to mock Christianity, Odyssey moves into the light, showing the Christian worldview not shown in much media. I thank Odyssey for sticking with us 25 years through thick and thin and showing us a journey of choices while keeping us entertained at the same time in a moment of truth. Well done!

17. Gary Locke
Odyssey has had numerous artists create visions of our favorite characters, but Locke has successfully translated all of our characters in a similar style just in time, with his fantastic work on repack art.

18. The Official Podcast.
Meanwhile, in another part of town, every other week, we're in for behind the scenes updates, interviews with the casts, and hearing from Bob and Jesse!

19. The Odyssey Scoop.
The most informational Odyssey fan site out there. Check it out!

20. Reviews.
I look forward to going online each weekend and discussing the latest episode of Odyssey, either on the ToO or by reading some of the other blog reviews, like at Just Another AIO Blog, The Changing Times, Twists and Turns (more news than reviews), Out of Control in Odyssey (What can I say? ;), AIO Thoughts, At Whit's End, Dave's AIO Blog, and the Voice of Odyssey! Someone should totally start an Adventures in Odyssey Analysis college course.

21. Brock and Diane.
If you've heard the saying "Sugar and spice make everything nice," you obviously haven't met Brock Eastman and Diane Ingolia, who put sugar and spice to shame. Brock and Diane light up the Official Podcast with their hilarious guest/cameo appearances throughout the year with their charismatic, warm personalities. And just look at how well Brock/Evan does those Social Shoutouts and Diane emceeing for GITS! A masterclass in likability for your viewing and listening pleasure (Diane's on A Time for Action and The Top Floor, Albums 46 & 48)!

22. The Story Team!
We gotta thank these people, man. These creative, talented writers, directors, and producers create the world of Odyssey. They shape the episodes with different ideas and thoughts, but with one goal. I honestly love these guys. I really do. These people bring in humor, drama, great lessons, and imagination to bring AIO to the air. They create characters with personality, and history. You can tell from the episodes they put in a lot of themselves, making it the best they can for their audience.  I thank Phil Lollar, Paul McCusker, Dave Arnold, Kathy Buchanan, Nathan Hoobler, Marshal Younger, Bob Hoose, and the entire writing team for continuing to bring Odyssey to life year after year; the sky's the limit!

23. Whit's End.
Oh how I've wished we had a Whit's End in the Bay. A place where we can get free ice cream sodas and advice, where we can escape and try out new inventions, go inside the Imagination Station. The fact that there are no plans for Whit's End helps us realize that our world continues to unlock new bits of information every day, and that while we might not know it all, He does, and it's all perfectly meant to be in the grand design.

24. Focus on the Family.
They're especially helpful for you to have that perfect date with Dad and girls' night out for Mom. I'm thankful for FOTF, who continues to aim to protect and serve the family, bringing people together to say "Welcome home," needed more than ever in a time of divorce, mass abortion, depression, and cynicality. If that's even a word. Thank you for producing an encouraging, values-based, smart show for kids (of all ages)! Now about that spinoff for teens...(just kidding, I don't want to be ungrateful!)

25. Our Heavenly Father!
How could we not love Odyssey without Him? Without God, we'd never have the loving, funny, wise and impacting episodes as we have now. He is the Ultimate Inspiration and Storyteller; the Creator of poetry, prose, and powerful writing. He's also the bestselling author of the Bible, which tells the greatest narrative ever told: the Gospel, which should make us go clashing cymbals as we see the meaning of God's love.

"Thank God for Odyssey!" - Whit, The Forgotten Deed

Looking forward to another great twenty five years, if it's God's will. Happy birthday, Odyssey!

Purchase any of the albums mentioned here (from 1-56) at CBD!

Very big updates to follow next week on our (hopefully you'll find it just as) exciting new feature. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Please feel free to comment and let us know why you're thankful for Odyssey.

Josh and Ally with the CT101

Hey guys! Really exciting news...we've been interviewed! Check out our interview with Alex Jefferson (aka Creative Thinker 101) at Just Another AIO Blog by clicking here!

Happy Veteran's Day to you all. Remember and thank those who have fought to protect our country. There are many episodes of Odyssey that focus on the realities of war, from Operation: Dig-out to The War Hero. Take a moment and listen to one of those episodes and draw parallels. While the idea of war is a very controversial and debated issue, one thing that remains clear is how God can use even the harshest images to reflect Him. As soldiers fight (and sometimes fall) to protect the country they love from harm, it brings to mind a parallel. Jesus died for us to protect every single one of us from sin, no matter where we have come from or what we have done. He is the Greatest Veteran, and he has triumphed over death! That's a victory everyone can get excited about.

-Josh

Introducing Repack Recoveries

Hey everybody! Today at OCO, we're proud to present our new feature: Repack Recoveries! The new feature is available by clicking on the tab next to the "Odyssey Phone Book."

What does this feature do? Here's the goals, outlined on the page:

"Hey everybody! If you're like me, you're an Odyssey collector who's trying to get the new repacks because they're so awesome and illustrated by Gary Locke. Only problems is, it's hard to know which albums are actually available in stores and online, because in some instances, some new album artwork has been posted, but the physical copy hasn't been released yet, or vice versa. It's a lot for one mind to figure out alone, but together, as Odyssey afficionados, we can...this feature can't happen without you! If you've seen the new edition of an album, please shoot me an email at jandakocompany@yahoo.com or PM me on the Soda Shop. Thanks everybody - and hopefully we can get as much information as possible as the Christmas season continues to approach!

By the way, if you're on Twittah, join the conversation by using the hashtag #AIOLIVE.

Wow, I have to visit Zimbabwe; Odyssey is the #1 show in the country, even secular, plus it's in fifty countries! Beat that American Idol!

8:36 AM PST: Jim Daly's kids' favorites: Mr. Grote and Jason. I sense a small rivalry between the bros.

8:39 AM PST: Connie's costume looks she got a bowlcut...please tell me it isn't true!

8:49 AM PST: These two kids are doing great at creating an AIO scene (oh yeah, Nathan Hoobler too)! They're adorable! I miss hearing Dave Madden and Walker Edmiston. Ben C. from the Soda Shop mentioned that he's using Pro Tools, just so you know.

9:24 AM PST: Interesting video on Terry Virts and his space mission with AIO!

9:30 AM PST: While I loved Anya's accent-switching, I'm not sure if this script suits her as well. She's still doing a great job though! (EDIT: Ditto Shona.)

9:38 AM PST: Hey Phil Lollar, Chris, Rob Jorgensen, Kimmy Robertson, Bob Luttrell, John Campbell, Marshal Younger, Fabio Stephens, Will Ryan, Brandon Gilberstadt, Janet Waldo, Maggie Malooly, Chad Reisser, Jerry Houser, Earl Boen, Jim Custer, Jess Harnell, Steve Harris, Townsend Coleman, Chuck Bolte, Kathy Buchanan, Bob Hoose, Paul McCusker! 11:40 AM PST: "All the world's a stage, and all of us are merely players. Without God as the director, Shakespeare's monologue is pretty depressing." - Bob

11: 51 AM PST: "I'd like to be Zach, so I'd be guaranteed a long career." -Andre Stojka, when asked what other character he'd like to be

"We both care about people, and we're both extremely beautiful." -Katie Leigh, when asked about what she and Connie have in common

"I really love staple guns." - Katie Leigh, when asked if she's afraid of staplers

715-716: The Perfect Church, Part 1 and 2

Happy October everyone! Apologies for the slower posting rate, but hey, it's October, and like a typical high school junior, I'm pulling 5 hour or less sleep hours on weeknights, so it's intense. I'm excited for this new season of Odyssey and am looking forward to reviewing it! Hopefully,  I'll be able to start reviewing Whit's Flop in the near future...anyways, today's review has a different format. Since Matthew's adventure is not in Odyssey (well, it is, but you know...), The Odyssey Times is replaced today by the Avery Watch, where I discuss performances that I feel deserve nominations!

NOTABLE LINES OF DIALOGUE:
"God is doing what he always does. He's working through fallen men and women to accomplish his purposes. It's been that way from the beginning." - Stephen

REVIEW:

At the beginning of the relaunch, I expected Odyssey to be amazing as usual and have the same standard of quality and entertainment that it usually has. So when Album 51 came out, I was left feeling disappointed. And so I set my sights on Album 52: there's a mystery with a clock tower, plus there's a Christmas show...what could go wrong? And although there were improvements, I was still left feeling disappointed. Next, I looked to Album 53: there's another conspiracy in Odyssey; this could be the new Novacom! Once again, disappointed. I learned to lower my expectations and acknowledge that Odyssey was going into a newer, younger direction, one that I might not necessarily like, but needed to accept. And yet, Album 54 built on Album 53 with more compelling stories, and Album 55 built from Album 54 with even better performances and stories and lessons. So how did I feel when I heard the first two-parter of 56?

Wow. Just, wow. Where to begin? I enjoyed seeing the new Imagination Station in action again (and we heard it today in Great Expectations, the ep that follows this one) and understood why it was created. The new "door" idea creates potential for many new story ideas for future episodes, and the story device works very well for today's ep. Matthew is a great choice to be in this adventure; he, Barrett, and Olivia are the most thoughtful kids in Odyssey in different ways.

Now, I love hearing Bible stories come to life on Odyssey, from The Imagination Station (Album 5: Daring Deeds, Sinister Schemes) to O.T. Action News. But normally, I already know how the story's gonna end, and it's just nice to hear the Odyssey team tell it. The Perfect Church pulls something off masterfully: it manages to take scripture (Acts 1:8 - 8:3) and create a narrative that tells the story and yet makes you wonder how McCusker/Younger (the writers of the episode) are going to tell it.

The performances that made up the story were top-notch. Andre Stojka does his best performance as Whit to date (and continues to be more Whit every album) and Eugene's computerized bits of information were helpful and helped drive the episode forward for more fresh listeners. It was great hearing Carolyn Hennesy again (voice of Ellen Shepard), and she makes a terrific Saphira in her scene (and we already know she's great at doing those kind of voices as she did in The Big Deal [Album 35: The Big Picture]). Georgia Dolenz has a stronger appearance here than in The Labyrinth, and plays wide-eyed and thoughtful well.  The episode is packed with a who's who of AIO character actors, from Keith Ferguson, Matt Hurwitz, Fred Tatasciore (who after a 16 episode run of playing villainous characters has made a 3 ep run of heroes following A Penny Saved), J.B. Blanc, and Saige Spinney. All we needed was Corey Burton (who by the way, needs to return to Odyssey, but that's another article)!

John Campbell's score for this episode was amazing. It felt true to the time period, yet slightly melancholic, which captured the essence of the episode completely. Sound design was terrific at recreating the world of Acts and making the "door" switches seamless and sleek. The dialogue was fantastic and moved the story along, while McCusker/Younger kept the story engaging the whole way through.

However, the most powerful scene was when Jim Cummings as Stephen testified to the high court with his defense. The fact that it was taken literally from the Bible, along with Cumming's commanding performance, made me begin to tear up. Now, I don't cry very often at media, unless some element of the form moves me (See: Clara). His acting is powerful, intense, and speaks to us today. In fact, the whole episode speaks to us today. The  church today is not perfect as well. The episode shows us how God uses all of us with our flaws for his purpose. We have our flaws, and we have our disagreements, and yet, God still calls us to fellowship, worship, and preach together. This can be hard, as I know well, but it's an important lesson for us to learn today. The whole episode feels very human, as often we think of the people of the Bible as superheroes, but God uses all kinds of people for his plan, from prostitutes to corrupt tax collectors to murderers (Saul!).

Paul McCusker and Marshal Younger have crafted an episode that deserves to be up there with the best of the best in Odyssey. The story is engaging, well-told, fresh, moving, and relevant; with powerful performances, dialogue, and sound. The theme is beautiful, with wonderful harmonies, and a score that captures the episode completely. I give this episode a 97/100, or an

Hey OCO readers!

I'll be writing about my hilarious first experience in my high school's radio station today later - and its striking parallels to Odyssey's Kids' Radio

Finalists Obtain the Program

Today, October 6, marks day 7 of a week-long push to vote for YOUR favorites, yes, your favorites, to move on to the finals in fabulous Colorado Springs, CO!

This...is American, oh wait, uh, GET IN THE SHOW!

Judges have watched over 5,000 entries and narrowed it down to your 12 semifinalists. Let's take a look at them, shall we? However, before I begin, if you're watching along with me, let's remember that these are kids between the ages of 6-15 who have little to no acting experience. Some might be a little over the top, while others might show shades of becoming a future Sam Johnson or Valerie. However, in the spirit of "getting in the show," I will leave you to draw any negative conclusions you might have to yourself. These kids worked really hard to perform a great audition, and these could-be-actors-someday made it to the semifinals! Let's gooooo...

Adrian has an amazing head of hair and pair of glasses that would make Eugene proud! His voice reminded me of Colby Cabrera.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Tithing script
BEST ASSET: voice

Annalee sounded like a young Mandy with elements of Olivia and Priscilla. Her vocal mannerisms were very staccato (from music: short) and enunciated, with a couple phrases that made her voice sound almost whimsical. Her mom's voice reminded me of the sound of 1st generation Odyssey.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Tithing script
BEST ASSET: adorable hand gestures to help her understand the meaning of lines

CONGRATULATIONS! Annaliese's voice is just a tad nasally, but it comes off as an enjoyable, quirky tone.  Her mom's voice reminds me of Leslie's mom from Back to School (Album 3: Heroes). Ally heard tones of a young Barrett and Olivia.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Tithing script
BEST ASSET: voice

CONGRATULATIONS! Anya: what a real multitasker you are. We should do a video together! I'm not entirely sure what accent she has (it sounds Irish or Scottish), but Odyssey really needs to take notice of this girl. She's pulling two characters by performing two accents simultaneously: Irish/Scottish and American.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Tithing script
BEST ASSET: accent switching

Eleisha, hey hey hey, you got a fancy mike at yo local Family Christian store! Also, YOU ARE THE SECOND COMING OF JESSIE MORALES, MY FRIEND! If this contest doesn't work out, and if Jessie Morales comes back to Odyssey and they need to recast her, you can take over. Ally and I also heard elements of Kelly and Liz in there as well. By the way, I know the parents aren't auditioning, but I'm loving a lot of their voices. Eleisha's mom had a wonderful accent and reminds me of - uh, brownie points to the first commenter that tells me!

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Tithing script
BEST ASSET: voice

Hannah has similar vocal inflections as Isaac Morton. Her favorite phrase is "you know," and Ally heard elements of Valerie, Kelly, and Liz. I heard a little bit of Courtney Vincent.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Gum script
BEST ASSET: tone

Marissa, to me, you sound like the SECOND COMING OF TRACI NEEDLEMEYER! However, Ally heard vocal inflections very similar to Trent, as well as vocal qualities similar to Camilla and Olivia.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Tithing script
BEST ASSET: "family-style" recording

Michael, Michael, Michael. I've definitely heard your voice before. WHERE???? Just watch; I'll be wondering this all weekend. He sounds like a combination of Alex Jefferson and Sam Johnson.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Gum script
BEST ASSET: voice

Morgan has an adorable voice that harkens back to Bethany Shepherd. She brought a lot of spunk to the gum script.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Gum script
BEST ASSET: voice

CONGRATULATIONS! Shona has a quirky voice that reminds me of the SECOND COMING OF SHANNON EVERETT! Ally thought Shona's voice reminded her of one of the women from The Help.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Gum script
BEST ASSET: voice

Tabby should've been cast as Valerie! In my opinion, it felt more natural than Paulie Rojas, who although is a very good Valerie as well, sometimes seems to force some kind of "valley girl" accent. Tabby has a voice that would be great like the likes of Alicia, Valerie, etc...there were also traces of Olivia in there too. The boy sounded like Matthew.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Gum script
BEST ASSET: voice

Timmy's vocal quality reminds me of Nathaniel Graham. However, I also loved, loved, loved his friend's voice. It was a husky, young quality that's an unique kind of voice that's never been heard on Odyssey. Back to Timmy, who also had elements of Sam Johnson.

MOST COMFORTABLE WITH: Gum script
BEST ASSET: voice

FINAL OBSERVATIONS: Oftentimes I was drawn to their helpers because they had such amazing voices! Certain lines in the gum script were over acted by almost everyone, while certain lines in the tithing script sounded very convincing by almost everyone. I used the term "SECOND COMING OF..." often because the vocal qualities were pretty eerily close. Acting and Odyssey wise, I'm casting my vote for Anya, Hannah, and Timmy. I felt that they were the strongest actors who sounded like they could be in Odyssey. Congratulations to all the finalists; I look forward to seeing who's gonna "get in the show!"

Be sure to comment and let us know who were your favorites!

The Hunt for Bloody October

Hey, we're back! It's been a week since I last posted, and I began starting a new review for this week when...I got sick. WAH WAH WAH. This threw off my entire schedule and has lead me to my sad conclusion (don't worry, it's not as bad as you think):

Since the month of October has me working on numerous school projects and midterm prep and PSAT prep, the number of articles will decrease to about four this month. I'll be doing a review of The Perfect Church while also including a review of Whit's Flop and analysis of the GITS finalists. Ally will finish a post on her favorite Odyssey eps/characters, and that's four. (Don't worry CT, Jason/Connie's on the agenda for November, hopefully! Oh, and sadly (+Old Judge), I'm not feeling inspired to do the Olympics article since they're over...perhaps for Sochi 2014?)

Other things that are keeping us busy include our secret project and a couple other opportunities that are coming up before the year closes. We hope to get that project out before the end of the year! Oh yeah, and Odyssey Phone Book updates probably won't be till after midterms, but I'll try.

Thanks for sticking with Out of Control in Odyssey, all y'all. We really appreciate your support!

Oh, by the way, I'm also super excited because the A's and Giants are both going to the playoffs, and the 49ers are having a second amazing season. BAY AREA FTW...okay, I have homework. Adios!

Thoughts on See You at the Pole

Tomorrow is See You at the Pole Day; a time where kids all around the world gather all around the flagpole and sing and pray together. Our school's revamped Christian club (which started last week to 60+ members, praise God!) is organizing one, and we heard it in the announcements in second block.

My radio teacher, who's a spiritual guy who picks and chooses from different religions, felt that that was infringing on separation of church and state, and that it shouldn't be near the flagpole as it associated Christianity with patriotism. I strongly disagreed, and we lightly debated both yesterday and today before moving on. Yesterday was a terrible day in general, and so I did my homework till 2 AM and moved on.

Today was different. Fresh off my positive reactions to my James Madison impersonation (for A.P. U.S. History class), I remembered The Forgotten Deed, where a similar event happened where Whit and the gang tried to protect Whit's End from being shut down since it was on government property. I emailed him with evidence from policies passed by President Clinton and several sources about other religions using patriotism for their own personal gain, and he responded with this:

Okay , so I am flatly awestruck..

how do you manage Calculus, tracking this rather "tentacular" issue .. and info digging / exhcange with a mentor / teacher / learner ? ..

I do NOT have any real concerns about religious meeting on campus and never have .. i rather thinks is enviable .. stylistically,  this flurry is curious and interesting to me .. as there are , necesarily, over and undertones ..

and this confusing era .. I observe that what works .. and that I seem to get right along the best with, all those who attend to the deepest heart of thier compassion and citizenship teachings  .. I do believe that only the meek inherit ( can have a right relationship with ) the Earth .. a miraculous manifestation of the mind and glory of G[od].

I post this not to paint my teacher as a Cryin' Bryan Dern. The point of this is to show you that the spectrum of people, personality, and thought is infinite...God's incredibly creative. Point is, don't label non-Christians as people who don't want to hear anything about Christ. While the battle between good and evil is black and white, our human nature is grayer as we are natural sinners, but God can also use us for good if we let him. My teacher is an agnostic (believes in some sort of spiritual force), but his goal for the radio station is to change the world by playing music from all cultures and introduce musical and cultural diversity around the globe. I'll be on the air next week and will let you know when I'll be on!

Don't be afraid to speak up to your teachers when they say something you don't believe. Don't be afraid to question Christianity; go online, ask a pastor, friend, or family member! And don't be afraid - God is blessing Odyssey, and he will bless you too. He's just waiting for you to ask. (NOTE: Not a prosperity gospel promo - don't take that TOO literally, you guys)

I'm hoping to eventually cover apologetics, The Truth Chronicles, and Odyssey with you guys; I really just need more hours in the day! I probably won't be out at the pole tomorrow 'cause I have jazz, but hopefully some of you will be up with me early in the morning.  As I'm jazzin', I'll be praying for all of you!

And now, back to my regularly scheduled APUSH/AP Calc etc. homework. Whit's Flop when I have time...

Thoughts on "The Golden Age of Odyssey"

Hello everyone! Sadly, it's another busy week in the high school environment, and not enough time to do a review of Whit's Flop. Instead, today, I present my view on whether the show today is "funnier than ever." This was originally posted on the Soda Shop topic about The Golden Age of Odyssey. Enjoy, and hopefully when I return from my music retreat, I'll be so audibly inspired that I'll write A LOT OF REVIEWS!

*Wishful thinking, Josh. You have lots of videos and projects to work on when you return.*

Well, a teen can dream, can't he? Enjoy, folks, and if you enjoyed what you read, consder joining an Odyssey message board. Learn about them here.

Apologies to everything highlighted in white. My favorite color is red; this was not my choice.

While the writers haven't changed, sometimes the writing changes. For example, often when a character voice changes, the character itself is written differently. We've seen this through the three incarnations of Whit, Katrina (seemingly not as intelligent-sounding), Aubrey (not as annoying), and Olivia (not as annoying). With this reboot in mind, to some listeners, including myself, it does seem as if the writers have tailored their writing more toward 8-12 listeners. Now, that's fine, well, and good, since the show is meant for them, but I think it's possible to write for all ages and have those 8-12 listeners enjoy it just as much. The best example I can think of is Toy Story 3 (which was nominated for Best Picture), a movie about toys that also subminally discussed life after death, loss, imagination, love, being wanted, dignity...these are all themes that anyone can relate to. It's disguised as a "kids movie," but the movie is crafted for everyone. That's what I love about Odyssey, and why I was disappointed with the first couple albums after the relaunch. Like Ben said, humor was spreadout through the characters. It wasn't always so intentional; it was natural - and hilarious. Albums 51-53 seemed to purposely try to make the listener laugh, which didn't make me chuckle. It almost felt at times like the writer was communicating via brain waves..."Come on, come on...laugh here!" As the writing was aimed more toward tweens, the humor seemed almost dumbed down at certain times.

Quote:
Ben Warren: "Forgiving More...or Less" features one of the most painfully awkward moments in Adventures in Odyssey history. The moment is awkward because John Avery Whittaker, my childhood hero and role model, says one of the most embarrassing jokes I've ever heard: "Big Scoop? I've got one here for the Ice Cream! Har. Har". Surely Camilla could have laughed. Someone could have laughed. Do we really want Whit to be portrayed as a bumbling, out of touch, geezer? If I remember correctly, the Whit I grew up with was a relatively funny guy who knew how to say a clever joke. Sigh. I suppose even role models say bad jokes, too.

I don't say all of this to bash the relaunch, but to lead to the current time in Odyssey history. Since Album 54, the writing has began to go back to those roots of Odyssey humor, of placing moments of laughter in between moments of happiness, and sadness, between many different moments. Jay's sense of humor finally won me over in Unbecoming Jay, and I loved the new dimension to his already multi-dimensional character in Mistaken for Good. The last two scenes of The Labyrinth were terrific, and I loved the dramedy balance in To Mend or Repair. Something Old, Something New took that approach as well with the comedy aspect of the Jones and Parker Detective Agency (finally, a case I was interested in...with the hilarious Penny as an excellent addition to the case) and the thoughtful, dramatic aspect with Connie. There were also great slapstick moments and a great end scene with Whit and Connie. Penny has been my favorite addition to the cast, as she adds to the list of characters who don't purposely mean to be funny RIGHT THIS INSTANT, but naturally IS Penny with her wonderful dialogue read by Kimmy Robertson.

Going with CT's comment, I don't agree as well that the new era is "funnier than ever." I have laughed out loud at Unbecoming Jay, To Mend or Repair (the terrific Mitzi McCall as Mrs. Kramer, another great addition), and Something Old, Something New. As we prepare to hear The Grand Design this fall (unless you abandoned your radio ways and BOUGHT THE DOWNLOAD EARLY...sigh...), the new era might not be "funnier than ever," but it's getting there.

Sunday Morning Scramble School - God is our Father

NOTE: Elements of today's SMSS are taken from Pastor Peter Wang's sermon at CBM Camp on Wednesday, August 1, 2012, entitled "Born of the Spirit," and covering Luke 15:11-32 and John 3:16-17.

Hey everyone; if you've read our Camp What-a-Nut Experience post, you'll know that we learned a lot at CBM Camp, and we intend to share it all with you! So today we'll be talking about fathers, which is conveniently a topic that Odyssey has talked about in many an episode.

Our fathers are not perfect. They're flawed human beings who have just been around a lot longer than the younger generation, and although they're not perfect, they can be very wise and instructive in teaching their kids about the Bible. Adventures in Odyssey has done a great job at showing fathers at both ends of the spectrum. There's always been a strong family figure in all of Odyssey's history, most notably George Barclay, Mike Mulligan, Ed Washington, and David Parker, although there have been many more. We also see examples of fathers struggling to be a "good father" or not trying, like Carson McKay. Album 46: A Date With Dad (and Other Calamities) has a central theme of fatherhood. Eugene, with Mr. Whittaker's help, searches for his long-lost father; Tamika and Ed learn about respect for parents and acknowledging the stages of kids' lives; the Washingtons learn about the difficulties of adulthood; Mandy learns that parents don't always do what their children want them to do; and Grady learns about our heavenly Father.

God is "our Father in heaven." What does that even mean? Ephesians 1 has a lot to say about the blessings we have in Christ. "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.  In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will- to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will." (Ephesians 1: 3-6, 11 [NIV]) God chose us, before the world even began, to be His children! Whit tells Grady in Three O'Clock Call (Album 46: A Date with Dad and Other Calamities) that "Like a father, God loves us, protects us, and teaches us. He's the perfect Father, better than any father on earth. God will never disappoint you."

Ephesians 1:5 says that we have been adopted as his children through Jesus Christ. Jesus bridged the gap between us and God - he gave us the WAY to God, the TRUTH of the Gospel, and a new LIFE in Him! In The Prodigal Jimmy, Jimmy disobeys his dad and squanders all of his money on video games. When he acknowledged that he sinned, and humbled himself, he was greeted with a great big hug from his dad. The parallel to the parable of the Prodigal Son doesn't include the older son, who asks why the younger son gets a party when he doesn't. This attitude is religion-based (see the previous SMSS post on right and wrong beliefs about Christianity) and the wrong attitude that Christians should have for the lost. We should join the party and rejoice when someone commits their life to Christ because they are receiving new life!

Romans 8:23 (NIV) says that "Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies." As we grow in Him, we should get ready for when Jesus comes back; the "redemption of our bodies." This is exciting news! As Kelly learns through her adventures in Odyssey, she is chosen, not only by her temporary stepparents, but by God himself (The Chosen One (Album 47: Into the Light) and The Imagination Station, Revisited (Album 50: The Best Small Town)). If you haven't accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, talk to someone you trust who's a Christian to find out how you can adopted into God's family and be one of His children. He loves you very much, and he's willing to adopt you, but it's up to you to "sign the adoption papers," to borrow the colloquialism, or lack of one.

Hope you enjoyed today's SMSS! It's been a busy week with not much time to post (EVIDENCE: I slept for an average of three hours this past week.). We'll see if things slow down this week...but I'm trying to finish our entry for the GITS Music Video Contest, working on a logo for another video, and doing research for new clubs that I joined (the Model U.N. Club, Philosophy Club, Literary Magazine, Interact, Key Club, PBinJ [People Believing in Jesus], and the Naptime Club), so hopefully we'll get some stuff up! The fall season of Odyssey will kick off October 6, and you'll be able to read our reviews of Album 56 as they air! I'm also starting to write the review for Whit's Flop and updating the Phone Book to line up with where we are in reviews. Thanks for reading!
